Not all weight-loss programs are created equal. In fact, there are four essential components to look for when selecting a comprehensive weight-loss method. All four components must be in place to ensure successful, lasting weight loss: making wise food choices, being physically active, making positive lifestyle changes, and establishing a supportive environment.
Participating in a weight-loss program benefits both women and men. According to a study published in the prestigious Journal of the Amer- ican Medical Association, clear evidence was provided that men and women randomized to follow the Weight Watchers method, with its emphasis on a supportive environment, lost significantly more weight than people assigned to lose weight alone. The two-year study involved over 700 overweight and obese men and women. Over the course of the trial, the participants assigned to attend weekly meetings lost three times more weight than those who dieted on their own. And the more meetings they attended, the more weight they lost!
