FROM A WOMAN’S VIEWPOINT WHAT YOU KNOW MATTERS

The media have certainly helped provide women with a plethora of health and nutrition information. Women today are better educated about health issues than women of any previous generation. Butthings can get confusing when reliable health and wellness informa- tion gets mixed up with unconstructive  images that support an unhealthy lifestyle.
Just as women are media targets for good informa- tion, they are also repeatedly exposed to images of underweight mod- els and messages that erode self-esteem. That negative information has the potential to increase negative moods, dissatisfaction with ones body, and possibly the symptoms of an eating disorder. Some studies have correlated a greater exposure to the mass media (televi- sion, movies, magazines, and the Internet) with a higher probability of obesity and a negative body image.
