He’s Fit, She’s Thin-The Language of Weight Loss

Its 8:00 A.M. and coworkers Marcus and Jada have a breakfast meet- ing with colleagues from their organizations purchasing department. As they enter the conference room, they confront a buffet table jam- packed with beverages, rich pastries, giant-sized bagels, bowls of whipped cream cheese, and single-serving packages of sugary cereals.
Marcus, who has recently noticed that hes put on a few pounds, pours himself a cup of coffee and takes a seat next to a male coworker who comments, “Marcus, its hard to believe a big guy like you doesnt eat breakfast.
He says: “I’m trying to get into better shape, so I ate a light break- fast at home”
Meanwhile, Jada has maneuvered her way along the buffet table, managing to take only a carton of skim milk and half a bagel without cream cheese. She has been trying to lose weight on and off for the past year. As she takes a seat next to Marcus, a female coworker who overheard Marcus and the other man talking comments, Are you on a diet, too?”
She says: “Since I started working here, Ive gone up two dress
sizes! I am dieting, and most of the stuff on the buffet table is off- limits for me.
