Situation: My entire family is going on a cruise next week: husband, kids, grandparents, siblings—everyone! Last year when I found out we were going, I started trying to lose weight. So far I’ve lost about 50 pounds, but I have 15 more to go. I know I will probably gain a few pounds on the cruise, but I’m not sure how to get back on track after we return. Any thoughts?
Strategies: You are smart to realize that the cruise is likely to put your weight loss on hold for a week. Rather than abandon all efforts, however, why not strive to return from the cruise at the same weight you left home? Walking the deck, taking physically active side trips, and making wise food choices at mealtime may be effective ways to take a break from your weight-loss regimen without experiencing a backslide. If you can achieve that goal, you’re likely to return from your week away with a sense of pride and accomplishment, which in turn can fuel your commitment to losing more weight. Sometimes taking a break without abandoning yourefforts—can be a good thing as it allows you a bit of a breather to recharge your batteries, bask in the success that you’ve already had, and regroup for the future.
