surprise! Jeff quickly surveys his apartment and is shocked to see it jam-packed with neighbors, close friends, and family members. His younger sister, Traci, thought it would be a great idea to throw a party for Jeff’s fortieth birthday. About a year ago, Jeff went through a painful divorce, and he has had a hard time getting his life back in order. He’s become a workaholic—he rarely goes out and makes no attempt to date. Traci suspects that his behavior might have something to do with the fact that he has put on a lot of weight, especially around his stomach.
Toward the end of the party, several of Jeff’s friends urge him to open his gifts. Reluctantly Jeff unwraps the usual age-related gag gifts—fiber supplements and adult diapers. A gift from his cousin Jill attracts his attention: the latest diet book, How to Lose 20 Pounds in 2Weeks and Feel Like You’re 20. Traci, who has been trying to lose weight on and off since she was a teenager, thinks it is the perfect gift. Shesays, “Jill! Where on earth did you find that book? I’ve been looking for it forever. It’s been on back-order for months. All the talk show hosts and magazines have given it rave reviews. All you have to do is follow the hourly meal plans and do all your grocery shopping online. Then you can use your cell phone to log in with a personal eating plan consultant. I can’t wait to read that book!” Jeff, who has been listening intently to his sister, takes a few min- utes to flip through the book. He grasps that it’s over 300 pages and full of lists of all sorts. He says,“Jill, this looks complicated, but it looks like something I can use. Traci, why don’t you read it first? Then you can fill me in on what I need to do!”
