Situation: My wife has been going to Weight Watchers meetings for the past several months, and she’s learned so much about eating smart and losing weight. I’m overweight as well, and she keeps ask- ing me to go with her, but I’m not sure I should join.
Strategies: The best way to answer that question is to ask one: What’s holding you back? Many men hold the belief that Weight Watchers meetings are a girls-only club and men are unwelcome. Although it is true that more women than men attend Weight Watchers meetings, hundreds of thousands of men attend weekly Weight Watchers meetings all over the world. And don’t think that making the decision to join Weight Watchers involves a lot of work and long-term contracts—that’s not the case at all. To ease your concerns, why don’t you ask your wife about the meetings she attends: Are there men there? Other couples? What goes on in the meeting that might be useful to you? Then try going to a meeting, with or without your wife. You’ll be able to see for yourself that the meeting is a lot more about people gathering to learn from one another and the leader and encourage one another’s weight-loss efforts than it is about whether you’re a man or a woman.
